Learn MoreYSGA offers English language development to scholars whose primary language is not English.
The purpose of Young Scholars’ English language development (ELD) Program is to increase the English language proficiency of the English learners attending our school.
The goals of this program are to assist English learners in using English and, per the Every Student Succeeds Act, to:
- Communicate in social settings
- Achieve academically in all content areas
- Interact in socially and culturally appropriate ways
We aim for our students to surpass state academic standards both in our English Language Development (ELD) program and in their mainstream classrooms. It's our goal to ensure equitable access to extracurricular activities for English learners. Additionally, we're committed to offering them the necessary cultural, social, and emotional support to facilitate their adjustment to their new cultural environment.
Young Scholars employs the Home Language Survey and parent interviews as means to identify students who would gain from ELD services. If a student's primary home language isn't English, we conduct an academic records review to assess English language proficiency. In the absence of sufficient evidence, we administer one of the WIDA screening tools—WIDA ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) for kindergarten students or the WIDA Screener for students in grades 1-12.
YSGA wants to ensure timely support to students. Below is the process followed for identifying and supporting students.
