ELD Services

YSGA offers English language development (ELD) to students whose primary language is not English. YSGA follows the process below.

Purpose of ELD

The purpose of Young Scholars’ English language development (ELD) Program is to increase the English language proficiency of the English learners attending our school.

Its goals are to assist English learners in using English and, per the Every Student Succeeds Act, to:

  1. Communicate in social settings
  2. Achieve academically in all content areas
  3. Interact in socially and culturally appropriate ways

Ensuring Student Success

We want our students to exceed state academic standards within our ELD program setting and their regular classroom environments. We want to provide equal opportunities for English learners to participate in extracurricular activities. We also want to give them the cultural, social, and emotional support that will help them adapt to their new cultural setting.

Identifying ELD Students

Young Scholars uses our Home Language Survey and parent interviews as tools to identify students who would benefit from ELD services. For students whose primary home language is not English, we complete an academic records review to determine if there is evidence of English language proficiency. If no such evidence is found, then the students are screened using one of the WIDA screening tools (WIDA ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) for kindergarten students or the WIDA Screener for students in grades 1-12).

Process

YSGA wants to ensure timely support to students.  Below is the process followed for identifying and supporting students.
